Harvey doubles up for Dodgers

Fort Dodge senior Gracie Harvey was a double winner in the girls swim team’s home dual with Des Moines Lincoln on Tuesday.

The Railsplitters topped the Dodgers, 97-66.

Harvey took gold in both the 200 individual medley (2:31.88) and the 100 butterfly (1:07.74). She was joined by junior Karlee Pearson, who was first in the 100 freestyle (1:01.46).

The quartet of Harvey, Pearson, junior Teagan Loots and junior Nora O’Connor captured the 200 freestyle relay in 1:54.48.

“We’re really focusing on staying positive through a tough part of the season,” FDSH head coach Ashley Beaumont said. “It’s always really easy at this time of year to see things start to drag both mentally and physically.

“Even though we got a win at Algona (against Perry last week), the fatigue started to settle in. I thought we were much better top to bottom performance- and effort-wise (Tuesday). We had the conversation (Monday) about being tough and pushing through, even when it hurts. We’re at that point, and I thought the girls really responded well (against Lincoln).”

O’Connor took second in both the 50 freestyle (28.75) and 100 backstroke (1:13.85). The Dodgers also had a pair of silvers in relay events, closing as runner-ups in the 200 medley relay (Adelyn Meyer, Morgan Townsend, Breeanna Kalvig, Loots in 2:42.21) and the 400 free relay (O’Connor, Harvey, Loots and Pearson in 4:32.76).

“I think the kids are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s a long tunnel,” Beaumont said. “I’m proud of them. They’re making great strides. Some of them are battling illness and injury, so all things considered, we’re really pleased with how (Tuesday) went.”

Janelle Chada was a double winner for the FDSH junior varsity, taking the 50 and 100 freestyle.

The Dodgers return to action on Tuesday at Des Moines East, followed by a triangular at Carroll.

Starting at $4.94/week.
