Gazelles take 6th at girls state rugby tournament
PLEASANT HILL — The Fort Dodge Gazelles continue to rewrite the record books on the pitch.
For the second straight season, in only the fourth in the program’s existence, the local rugby squad participated in the state tournament this past weekend. Sixth-seeded Fort Dodge placed sixth.
“State was a great display of the rugby community,” said Gazelles head coach Corey Peterman. “The camaraderie between teams — wishing each other luck and rooting for each other — is something you don’t usually see in other sports, but it’s a staple for rugby.
“Seeing our team taking part in those activities between games was truly special.”
The sixth-seeded Gazelles (9-7 overall) lost to third-seeded Southeast Polk, 17-0, in their opener. They bounced back with a 14-10 win over Mason City to reach the fifth-place match.
Fort Dodge then suffered a 22-5 loss to Central Springs.
Against Mason City, Ky Ky Mosley and Bella Lee each had tries. Lee recorded two conversions as well.
Against Central Springs, Mosley had a try.
Senior Dakota Pommer earned first team all-state status, and junior Ky Ky Mosely earned honorable mention recognition.
“The amount of heart, grit and determination from this team is unmatched,” Peterman said. “Most of the teams had to play all 42 minutes over three games. Down by three points with no time left, Dakota poached the ball to regain possession, and got it out wide to Bella (Lee). Although tackled along the sideline, Bella released the ball, picked it up and scored for a walk-off, game winning try.
“These ladies were completely exhausted at the end of that game, and dug deep. Sheer will and determination won that match (versus Mason City).”
The Gazelles will return a strong mix of experience next season. They will see the graduation of Pommer, Tyran Peterman, Sharol Corado, Jessenia Elias and Emma Estlund.
“Ky Ky, Bella and Darianis (Ortiz-Colon) will be back next year as seniors,” Peterman said. “Mariana (Taute) and Cailey (Cripe) will be juniors, and Brooklyn (Lamoureux) will be a sophomore. Hopefully, the success and recognition we had this season gets more girls involved next year.
“With only six returning players, new players will be critical to our growth. We’ve improved every year since our start in 2022, and are dedicated to continuing building a highly-competitive program.”
