Area runners load state field
Tyra Schupbach continued her strong fall, punching a ticket to the Class 1A state cross country championships with a win in Emmetsburg on Thursday.
Schupbach, a senior for West Bend-Mallard, ran a season-best 19:02 to claim the title at a state-qualifying race.
Joining her from the area at state will be Emmetsburg’s Rachel Schany, Alexis Cummins from North Union, Julia Swift of Bishop Garrigan and the Newell-Fonda girls.
The East Sac County boys claimed a team title to advance, as Emmetsburg’s Ben Cox will join them.
The 1A state cross country championships are set for Saturday, Nov. 1 in Fort Dodge from Kennedy Park and Lakeside Golf Course.
Landon Sporrer was second overall behind Sioux Central’s Lucas Wernimont for the individual title, as the senior went 16:38. Riley Aragon was third in 17:16 and Owen Engel finished fourth in 17:22.
Oliver Engel placed 11th in 18:27, Xander Hemer was 15th and Kenton Ackerman was 20th.
Mareni Brabec led the Newell-Fonda girls, as she was fourth in 20:32. Danika Meyer placed eighth, Quinn Sievers was ninth, Ellie Sievers finished 17th, Elliot Hamilton was 24th, Paige Erickson placed 51st and Kyia Copp was 55th.
Elijah Cox was 23rd for the E-Hawk boys followed by Cooper Chizek in 63rd, Kyle Europa in 72nd and Walter Reedy in 79th.
Schany finished fourth overall with a personal-best of 20:27 while Cummins was sixth in 21:19. Cox was fifth, going 17:33 for a personal-record.
Schany, a senior with a state track and field title on her resume, was competing on her home course. She helped the E-Hawks finish fourth overall, as Sioux Central and Sibley-Ocheyedan each advanced as team qualifiers.
Along with Schany, Rory Elbert was 30th, Caroline Burdick finished 31st, Taylor Thayer was 34th, Mya Morton placed 40th, Abigail Biddle finished 44th and Mikayla Johnson was 50th.
West Bend-Mallard’s Lilly Morey finished 20th overall with Maddie Fehr right behind in 21st. Nevayda Ingram was 41st for the final Wolverine runner.
North Union also had Alyssa Welbig finish 27th for the girls while Traecer Starnes was 46th, Kade Madden was 57th, Samuel Kirkegaard was 69th and Edward Champney was 78th for the boys.
In Eagle Grove, Iris Melody earned a spot in the 2A state championships, placing 10th overall. The senior clocked a time of 21:33 and will run on Friday, Oct. 31 at state.
Teammate Jossa Haupert was 42nd and Abigai Kistenmacher was 56th.
Van Meter’s Laura Streck was the race winner as Van Meter, Dike-New Hartford and Jesup advanced.
Southeast Valley was 10th overall, as Katie Field placed 47th. Charlie Dorsey was right behind in 48th followed by Ruby Stimpson (53rd), Meia Hefley (72nd) and Brooke Peterson (75th).
For Eagle Grove, Myka Anderson placed 24th as the Eagles were 11th. Ingrid Pull was 63rd, Lydia Kienzle finished 64th, Baylee Steig was 77th and Ruby Coldiron finished 79th.
Declan Spencer led the South Central Calhoun boys, placing 38th overall. Brent Thielen was 71st, Joe Thielen was 81st, Logan Rubendall was 82nd, Derek Greene was 86th, Isaiah Batten was 93rd and Reuben Potts was 97th.
Pocahontas Area’s Sawyer Storms was 40th, Natalie Sommerlot finished 68th and Ashlyn Duitscher was 70th. For the boys, Julion Valenzuela was 76th, Jordyn Gonzalez was 96th and Paul Peterson was 98th.
