Another ranked foe for No. 9 Tritons

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — The ninth-ranked Iowa Central football team remains on the road this week, heading to Kansas to face No. 12 Coffeyville.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

This will fourth ranked opponent for the Tritons (4-2 overall), as they have also faced No. 1 Hutchinson, second-ranked Iowa Western and top-rated (NJCAA Div. III) College of DuPage. Iowa Central still have games with No. 7 Garden City and 14th-ranked Butler on the schedule.

Last Saturday, the Tritons handled DuPage on the road, 49-13, as Ethan Johnson ran for a career-high 262 yards on 16 carries, scoring two touchdowns. Trevon Taylor threw for 103 yards with a TD while Damarcus Creecy had two rushing touchdowns and a passing score.

As a team, Iowa Central racked up 709 yards of total offense, running for 426 while throwing for 283.

“We played really well up front and Ethan did a great job of making guys miss,” ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto said. “He went 7-to-8 yards almost every carry without even being touched as our offensive line continues to get better and better with each week.”

Johnson, who was named the NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week, has 478 yards on the season, averaging almost 12 yards per carry. Creecy has seven passing scores and five more rushing TDs, leading the way with 513 yards in the air.

Ty Purdy has 489 yards passing and six touchdowns while Taylor has 164 and two in two games since returning from an injury suffered last year.

Jacob Kania leads the team with 21 receptions and six touchdowns, as Kamare Williams has 307 yards receiving and three scores.

Coffeyville (3-2) has scored wins over Garden City, Butler and Highland around losses to Cisco and Iowa Western. They downed Garden City by two and Butler by three before blowing out Highland.

Mac Armstrong has thrown for 1,022 yards and 10 touchdowns with no interceptions on 132 attempts. Steven Robinson has 331 yards rushing and Jalile Best has 314 yards receiving. Khris Thomas has caught four receiving TDs and has 224 yards on 14 receptions.

“Coffeyville is a tough team that is big on both sides of the line and has a really good quarterback that can get the ball to multiple players in the RPO game,” Montalto said. “They played really well vs. Iowa Western and own some nice wins.”
