Triton men take down No. 6 Western Iowa Tech

The Iowa Central men’s soccer team used a pair of early goals to score a big win here Saturday.

Two Lautaro Brunig Leites scores led the Tritons to a surprising 2-0 victory over No. 6 Western Iowa Tech on the campus of Iowa Central.

Luka Vasiljevic and Vito Callaci each tallied an assist in the victory.

“Western Iowa Tech is a very good team coming off a win over (national) No. 2 Northeast,” ICCC head coach Pablo Rodriguez said. “This further shows that there are nothing but good teams in the region, and that anyone can win or lose on any given day.”

Earlier this week, the Tritons (8-2 overall, 2-1 in the ICCAC) downed Hawkeye to snap a two-match losing skid. That momentum carried over into weekend, as they earned a key win in a region that features multiple ranked teams with Northeast sitting at No. 2 and Iowa Lakes at No. 5 in the latest poll.

“Our guys really came together as a team and played well for 90 minutes,” Rodriguez said. “We also have guys that come off the bench and do a great job for the team.

“There is a lot of talent in the region and there is a lot of talent on our squad.”

Iowa Central got on the board five minutes into the match, with the second goal also coming in the first half. The Tritons finished with eight shots on goal and 13 shots total, recording seven saves against Western Iowa Tech.

Next action for Iowa Central will be on Wednesday at Marshalltown.
