No. 2 Reivers up next for Tritons
COUNCIL BLUFFS — There will be no rest for the 10th-ranked Iowa Central football team.
Coming off a hard-fought 35-17 loss to No. 1 and defending national champion Hutchinson last weekend, the Tritons (2-1 overall) square off with second-ranked Iowa Western (2-1) in ICCAC action here Saturday.
Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. from Titan Stadium.
Iowa Central hung with Hutchinson for the better part of four quarters before a key turn in momentum late in the game caused a 10-point swing. The Blue Dragons blocked a field goal attempt that would have made it a 28-20 game, as Lekedrin Harvey broke free on an 80-yard TD run to supply the final score.
“Hutchinson is really, really good,” ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto said. “They are No. 1 in the country for a reason. I was proud of our guys because, even though we didn’t play great, we were still in it until late.
“I think that gives us confidence we can go with anybody.”
Damarcus Creecy threw for 119 yards and ran for 43 with a touchdown, as Kamare Williams caught two passes for 85. Marcellus Chandler had a 98-yard kickoff return that got the Tritons on the board after Hutchinson took an early 14-0 lead.
Creecy tied it at 14 with a 13-yard TD scamper late in the third.
Iowa Central has used Creecy, Ty Purdy and Tyler Smith in all three games at quarterback this season, as the trio have combined for 10 passing touchdowns and 722 yards.
Creecy is also the leading rusher with 113 yards and two TDs, as CJ Phillip has a pair of rushing touchdowns to go along with him. Jacob Kania has five receiving scores on 11 receptions for 172 yards and Williams, a Louisville tranasfer, has 180 yards and two touchdowns.
Iowa Western, who saw its quest for a three-peat as national champions come to an end vs. Hutchinson last fall, dropped a 30-27 decision to the Blue Dragons earlier this month. They own wins over Georgia Military and Dodge City.
“Iowa Western might be more physical than Hutchinson,” Montalto said. “They have a quarterback who can really sling it and some good skill players. (Hutchinson and Iowa Western) are the best two teams in the country and it’s not even close, so we have our hands full again this week.”
Malachi Marshall has thrown for 753 yards and eight touchdowns, Daniel Swinney leads the rushing attack with 274 yards and four TDs, and Jaivyn More has 11 receptions for 295 yards and three touchdowns.
Former Webster City standout Jaxon Cherry has appeared in two games, recording two tackles from his defensive line position. Humboldt grad Parker Sleiter is a freshman long snapper for the Reivers.
