No. 2 Iowa Western tops 10th-rated Tritons
COUNCIL BLUFFS — The 10th-ranked Iowa Central football team had trouble getting into a rhythm here on Saturday, falling to No. 2 Iowa Western, 48-17.
A week after battling No. 1 and defending national champion Hutchinson to a 35-17 loss inside Dodger Stadium, the Tritons (2-2 overall, 0-1 in the ICCAC) fell behind early to the Reivers and couldn’t slow them down.
Malachi Marshall’s short touchdown run with three minutes to play in the opening half made it 41-3, as he also threw two TD passes in the first half for Iowa Western. The Reivers also got a pair of rushing scores from Jamari Ford and a pick-6 by Jerome Baker.
Ty Purdy hit Dalen Huston and Damarcus Creecy found Sejhe Jackson for touchdowns to lead the Tritons. Purdy completed 10 of 20 for 86 yards and Creecy had 63 yards passing and a team-high 52 yards rushing.
Darrion Gilliam caught four passes for 43 yards and Kamare Williams had four receptions.
For the Reivers, Marshall was 10 of 18 for 113, Daniel Swinney ran for 52 yards and Jaivyn Moore caught three passes for 63 yards with two touchdowns.
Jaxon Cherry, a Webster City graduate, record half-a-sack and had two tackles for Iowa Western on defense.
With the win, the Reivers retained the Kinney Cup, named after former Iowa Central school president Dan Kinney and his father, who previously served as president at Iowa Western. The younger Kinney is now the president at the school, following in the footsteps of his father.
Iowa Central returns home this Saturday to host Dodge City for Homecoming at noon.
