Gaels sweep in volleyball on their new home court
The St. Edmond volleyball team christened the new gym floor with a sweep over Storm Lake here Tuesday evening.
Scores were 25-23, 25-19 and 25-21.
Over the weekend, the Gaels (3-3 overall) were scheduled to host their annual home invitational inside the SEHS gym. However, the event was moved to Hodges Fieldhouse on the campus of Iowa Central.
Senior Ava Underberg led St. Edmond with nine kills, freshman Eden Horn recorded eight with four blocks, and junior Chloe Palmer added five kills.
“It was good to come out after a light practice (Monday) and get a win,” SEHS head coach Heather Seeden said. “We made a few more adjustments, but I feel like we are settling into some rotations.
“It was pretty basic — we are still trying to see who fits in where — but we’ll start running some more plays here as the season progresses.”
The opening set with the Tornadoes (4-3) was a back-and-forth affair, as each team put together multiple rallies. St. Edmond led 5-1, Storm Lake came back to take a 12-8 lead, and the Gaels answered behind Horn.
St. Edmond would go on a 9-3 spurt, as Horn recorded her first three kills on the home floor.
“We saw what Eden is capable of, both in terms of her size blocking and attacking,” Seeden said. “She definitely gives us something in the middle that we haven’t had.”
Horn finished the opening set with kills for the 24th and 25th points.
The Gaels took control of the match in the second, turning a 9-9 draw into an 18-10 lead. The Tornadoes would rally, closing within three, but St. Edmond finished it off with four consecutive points.
Seeden was critical of one key area, as the Gaels committed 13 service errors. They did have 12 aces overall, as senior Ava Andrew had five and freshman Ella Vandi recorded three.
“That is just way too many,” Seeden said. “We are a risk-reward team with our service game, but we have to cut down on the mistakes.”
Andrew had back-to-back aces to give St. Edmond an early lead in the third, as a kill by first-year player Anna Lursen made it 11-6. The Gaels would never trail after erasing an early deficit.
Seniors Faith Shirbroun and Lursen each recorded four kills, Palmer added two aces and Shirbroun and junior Abby Huss both had one.
For Storm Lake — which is co-coached by Skylar Cole, the daughter of St. Edmond graduate Chris Cole — Grace Kenkel had five kills.
The Gaels are right back at home when they host Hampton-Dumont/CAL in the North Central Conference opener on Thursday at 7 p.m.
