Gaels ousted in regional finals
WATERLOO — An incredible run for the St. Edmond girls tennis squad came to an end here Saturday.
The Gaels fell in a Class 1A, Region 7 championship to Dike-New Hartford, 5-0, as the Wolverines advance to team state. St. Edmond qualified for the state event this past spring for the first time in program history.
Seniors Ava Andrew and Ava Underberg played their final matches for the Gaels (8-1 overall), falling at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions. Chloe Palmer and Olivia Andrew lost in super-tiebreaker sets, Abby Huss suffered a defeat, and Sophia Schlienz had her match called after the dual was decided.
“I could not be more proud of this group of girls,” SEHS head coach Shawn Neverman said. “We knew the task at hand was going to be a tough one because Dike-New Hartford is one of the top tennis programs in the state. But these girls prepared and came into the match ready to give it everything they had. That’s what they did.”
Olivia Andrew rallied at No. 5 after dropping the first set, 7-5, to win the second, 6-1. She fell to Autumn Meester in a super-tiebreaker set, 10-5. Palmer claimed the opening set of her singles match with Haley Badker at No. 3.
“These senior girls have helped position our program near the top of 1A,” Neverman said. “We are going to miss them so much next year, but I’m excited about the kids we have coming back and know they are going to work hard over the offseason to keep us in this position.”
Along with Ava Andrew and Underberg, St. Edmond will graduate Maggie Flaherty and Lucy Midtling. The Gaels have gone 44-9 over the last four years in dual action.
