Fort Dodge swimmers top Perry

ALGONA — For the first time under head coach Ashley Beaumont the Fort Dodge girls swim team traveled to Algona for a meet on Thursday.

The Dodgers competed against the host Bulldogs and Perry in a triangular at the Algona YMCA.

The Dodgers toppled Perry, 63-56, and lost to Algona 79-51. The Bulldogs swept the meet with a 72-50 victory over Perry.

“Our girls are very tired and have been working hard, so it was nice to go up there and get a win,” said Beaumont, who is in her 12th season at the helm.

Senior Gracie Harvey brought home the only victory for the Dodgers in the 100 butterfly. Fort Dodge came away with five runner-up showings.

Harvey won in 1:09.58. The Dodger was also second in the 200 freestyle (2:21.25).

“Gracie always has good performances,” Beaumont said. “There wasn’t a ton of competition to push her (in Harvey’s events), but it was great to score and get those points.”

Junior Karlee Pearson earned silver medals in the 200 individual medley (2:39.25) and the 100 breaststroke (1:14.50). Junior Nora O’Connor was second in the 100 backstroke (1:15.93).

The 200 freestyle relay of O’Connor, Harvey, junior Teagan Loots and Pearson was also second (2:01.22).

Loots was third in the 50 freestyle (:30) and the 500 freestyle (7:02.81). O’Connor took bronze in the 100 freestyle (1:06.16).

The 200 medley quartet of O’Connor, Pearson, Harvey and Loots was third in 2:08.27.

“It’s such a different year with a smaller group,” Beaumont said. “It was very nice to get a win and give them more confidence as the season goes.

“Addie Meyer did an amazing job with the way she swam.”

Algona’s Ella Welp was a double gold medalist and part of the Bulldogs’ winning relay.

Reese Taylor, a three-time state qualifier, won the diving event for the Bulldogs.

Welp won the 50 freestyle in 25.64, to go along with her victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.86).

The 200 freestyle quartet of Kinzee Thilges, Hanna Dose, Natalee Reemstma and Welp won for Algona in a time of 1:51.90. Keira Frideres prevailed the 500 freestyle (6:52.14). Mada Steburg took the 100 backstroke (1:14.23).

Algona came away with eight runner-up performances on the night as well.

The Dodgers have a bit of a break now and are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Des Moines East.
