WEBSTER CITY — Algona’s Gavin Weber was close to the Lynx Invitational championship here a year ago.
On Tuesday evening at the Links Golf Course, the Bulldog senior captured the individual title and led the Bulldogs to the team crown.
The Bulldogs (54) finished ahead of Manson Northwest Webster (87) for the team championship in the Gold division race — their third straight in Webster City. Southeast Valley (89) was third, followed by St. Edmond (104). Eagle Grove (151) was sixth.
Weber crossed the tape in 16:20.81, ahead of St. Edmond senior Anthony Valles (16:52.25), who was the bracket’s silver medalist.
“Anthony stuck to the plan,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “I wasn’t sure what Weber was going to do, but he took off and Anthony just stayed the course.
“Our times aren’t necessarily reflective of our competitiveness. “As a program we really ran hard. They just went out and got after it, from the boys to girls to all of our JV runners.”
Manson Northwest Webster senior Thatcher Oswald (17:20.12) crossed in third.
Brooks Morgan (17:26.10) gave the Bulldogs two runners in the Top-5 with his fifth place performance.
Algona’s Cohen Thilges (19:10.17) was 14th, Breckin Borchardt (19:34.79) 16th and Axton Hood (19:42.48) 18th.
Eagle Grove’s Hunter Waldo-Martinez (18:35.45) took eighth for the Eagles in the Gold bracket.
Kyle Widlund (18:38.17) gave the Cougars two in the Top-10 with a ninth place showing. Rowan Poutre (19:06.94) was 13th for the Cougars.
Southeast Valley went back-to-back with a 10th and 11th for Lincoln Akins (18:51.44) and Owen Nuss (18:58.16), respectively. August Akins (19:42.48) took 17th.
Erik Larson (19:05.22) in 12th, Jonah Carlson (26th in 20:33.50), Andrew Barwin (29th in 20:37.65) and Aidan Reel (35th in 21:01.35) rounded out the Gael lineup.
“Jonah took a minute-and-a-half off his time from last Thursday (in Gowrie),” Szalat said. “Erik looked way faster than his time showed. He ran a smart race.
“Aidan ran a great race, and the sky’s the limit for Andrew.”
In the purple division, Humboldt’s Henry Kramer had the best area finish in 12th (17:53.67).
Webster City’s Justin Callahan (17:59.70) was 15th and Jack Barner (19:00.450 took 23rd.
Fort Dodge’s Jayce Point (18:27.37) placed 18th.
“The guys ran well,” said FDSH head coach Joe Jackson. “It was nice to see Jayce back in the lineup. He got out a little quick, but he was able to hang on and put in a good race.”
Rounding out the scoring for the Dodgers was Aidan Recker (19:04.03) in 25th, Jones Hensley in 29th (19:21.87), followed by Corban McHone (19:36.67) and Joos Langkjaer (20:14.52) were 34th and 37th, respectively.
“Aidan and Jones ran good races and kept passing people,” Jackson said. “Corban’s second mile was great.
“Coach (Austin) Read and I talked about how it was fun to watch them all compete.”
Fort Dodge back in action next Thursday when they run at Marshalltown.
The Gaels will compete on Sept. 13 at Ridge View in the CYO Meet.
