Area teams ready to play
All the two-a-days and lining up against your teammate is over.
Prep football teams hit the field for Week 1, anticipating action on the gridiron since the first day of practice.
Like unusual teams will begin with their non-conference schedules and will play a different number of games, depending on their class.
Algona (0-0 overall) will begin the season with an intriguing matchup for the second straight year. The Bulldogs (0-0) will play last year’s Class 2A state runner up Spirit Lake. The Indians have won four of the last seven games. Algona won the opener a year ago, 42-40.
Humboldt (0-0), who was the Class 3A runner up last season, will host Spencer (0-0).
In Week 1, there are two area vs. area matchups. Southeast Valley (0-0) will travel to Manson Northwest Webster (0-0). The Cougars are coming off one of their best seasons in school history.
In eight-player action, Newell-Fonda (0-0) will head to North Union (0-0).
Algona (0-0) at Spirit Lake (0-0)
This could be a match up of potentially two top five teams in Class 3A and 2A, respectively.
The Bulldogs have two potential All-State picks in quarterback Nathan Manske and Evan Allie.
Manske stepped in late the season for his brother Alex Manske (who is second string quarterback at Iowa State). Manske threw for 860 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Allie was a do-it-all player for the Bulldogs, scoring from four different aspects of the game. Allie had one rushing touchdown, eight receiving scores to go along with 786 yards. He returned two interceptions to the end zone and a punt for a score.
William Weichert is back after leading the Bulldogs, who advanced to the quarterfinals in 2024, on the ground with 818 yards and nine touchdowns.
Spirit Lake won 11 games last year, losing to West Lyon, 42-7 in the 2A championship game.
The Indians will have to replace quarterback Caden Lundt, who threw for 2,743 yards and 39 touchdowns.
Spirit Lake’s leading rushers, Bode Higgins (606 yards) and 14 touchdowns and William Ditsworth (505 yards) and eight scores, are also gone. Dylan Stecker, who is a walk-on at Iowa, also graduated after 1,223 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns.
Spencer (0-0) at Humboldt (0-0)
Humboldt will look to carry on the tradition of the postseason after reaching the 3A championship last year, were they lost to unbeaten Dubuque Wahlert, 49-14.
The Wildcats will look at Jackson Flaherty to take over the quarterback spot for graduate Coen Matson, who threw for 2,616 yards and 28 scores.
Junior Cash McIntire is back as the leading rusher after running for 566 yards and five scores.
Senior Chase Flaherty had a banner year with 808 yards and nine receiving touchdowns. Senior Valley Davis caught 31 balls for 496 yards and seven touchdowns.
Humboldt beat Spencer 27-10 last year.
Senior Kamden Young returns as the leading rusher for the Tigers, running for 613 yards and eight scores.
Southeast Valley (0-0) at Manson Northwest Webster (0-0)
It was a banner season for Manson Northwest Webster last year, as they won the district championship and advanced to the second round of the Class 1A playoffs.
The Cougars will have a lot of new faces in new places this season, as graduation hit the locker room hard.
Gone is quarterback Logan Moline, who had 929 yards and five touchdowns. All-time leading rusher Kamden Birkey graduated after a campaign of 1,091 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Matt Condon has also graduated after scoring from four different facets of the game. Condon had one passing, four rushing, two receiving and a kick return for a score.
The Cougars won the tilt with the Jaguars last year, 28-26. MNW has won five of the last seven contests.
Jaguar quarterback Cale Vansickle has graduated after a year of 1,128 yards and eight scores. Vansickle also had 621 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. Brady Hanson ran for 526 and seven scores.
Logan Jaeschke is back as the leading receiver. Jaeschke caught 38 balls for 443 yards and five scores.
Newell-Fonda (0-0) at North Union (0-0)
Perennial power Newell-Fonda will welcome North Union to the eight-man game.
This will be the first season for the Warriors on an eight-man field.
The Mustangs will have a new face at quarterback as Max Carlson is gone. Carlson threw for 1,174 yards and 17 scores. He also ran for 858 and 14 touchdowns.
Seniors Jacksyn Hogrefe and Trevor Tauber are back as the leading receivers. Hogrefe caught 33 balls, rumbling 580 yards and six trips to the end zone. Tauber caught 21 balls for 331 yards and four scores.
North Union junior Greyson Colegrove will be back under center. Colegrove threw for 516 yards and two scores. He ran for 507 yards and seven touchdowns.
GTRA (0-0) at West Bend-Mallard (0-0)
The Titans won nine games a year ago and lost to CAM in the first round of the playoffs, 67-64.
They’ll have to replace senior Kasey Hough, who threw for 1,501 yards and 24 scores.
Teagan Hanson will take over the spot, after a 786 yard and 12 touchdown campaign.
Hough also ran for 733 yards and 16 scores. Kenny Ness is the leading rusher back after 296 yards and five trips to paydirt.
Senior Jaxson Schnell is back. Schnell caught 47 balls for 1,040 yards and 18 touchdowns.
The Wolverines lost in the first round of the playoffs a year ago.
The running back duo of seniors Austin Schmidt and Cole Fehr are gone. Schmidt ran for 1,058 yards and 15 scores, while Fehr had 773 and 14 scores.
