After getting their feet wet here last season, the West Fork softball team is looking to make some noise.
The Warhawks did just that on Tuesday at Rogers Park, advancing to the Class 2A semifinals while winning their first state game, 7-1 over Durant. West Fork (23-6 overall) will now play defending champion Van Meter (32-2) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. back on Iowa Central Field.
Preslee Dickman hit a two-run homer in the third as the Warhawks broke an early scoreless tie with a three-spot. They followed that up with four more runs in the fourth to put some distance between themselves and the Wildcats (21-13), who were looking to add to their 2013 state title.
West Fork has won 13 of 15 with losses to 1A qualifiers Clarksville and Mason City Newman. Five of the six defeats have been by two runs or less. They will get a rematch with Van Meter, who topped them in the quarterfinals here last season, 10-0.
“We’re excited about getting a rematch,” West Fork pitcher Libby Trewin said. “It feels great to be moving on and we get a chance to redeem ourselves.
“We talk about going all in, all out and we came out with energy.”
Trewin spun a four-hitter, striking out eight while adding an RBI at the plate. Dickman was 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, also drawing two walks. JoAnna Wallace finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored and Brylee Dickman had two hits and drove in a pair.
Durant will now take on East Marshall (27-10) on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in a consolation contest on Dodger Field.
