Six area athletes on A-S squad

Six Messenger-area softball players earned Iowa Girls Coaches Association All-State honors on Monday.

In Class 1A Newell-Fonda teammates Kinzee Hinders, Anna Mercer and Ellie Sievers were all honored.

The senior duo of Hinders and Mercer were on the first and second teams respectively. In her freshman season, Siever was on the third team.

Bishop Garrigan senior Hanna Merron was on the 1A third team

Southeast Valley senior Chloe Lambert was a Class 3A third team selection.

North Union sophomore Shallie Walders was an honorable mention.

Hinders was a big part of the Mustangs return to the state tournament. They lost their first contest, but bounced back with a victory.

At the plate Hinders had 43 runs and 41 hits with 10 extra base hits and 27 RBI. She hit at a .451 clip from her shortstop position.

Mercer scored 43 runs and collected 55 hits. She drove in 46 runs, while hitting .455.

Mercer was the ace for Newell-Fonda, throwing 144-plus innings. She was 17-8 with a 2.61 ERA and 115 strikeouts.

Sievers scored 42 runs on 44 hits,with nine home runs and 39 RBI.

Merron scored 30 runs on 21 hits and blasted nine home runs. She batted .382 and drove in 35 runs.

For Lambert, it was a strong finish to her career. She was 13-11 in the circle with a 2.49 ERA. She had 129 strikeouts.

At the plate Lambert drove in 26 runs on 31 hits and 22 runs scored.

For North Union, Walders had 38 hits and crossed the plate 31 times with 21 RBI and a .422 batting average.
