PCM finds a way with late comeback

Libby Winters capped off a 4-for-4 day with a triple as PCM completed an improbable comeback to edge West Liberty here Monday night in a Class 3A quarterfinal at Rogers Park, 5-4.

Down 4-1 entering the seventh, the Mustangs worked runners on before Winters cleared them with a shot to center.

PCM (26-4 overall) will now take on top-ranked Dubuque Wahlert (35-7) in the Class 3A semifinals on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. on Channel Seeds Field.

“I was just thinking we’d try to get a hit here and move the runners along,” PCM head coach Shaun Hudnut said. “Once I saw it get by, I knew we had to send them.”

West Liberty (22-8) had taken control of the contest with a three-spot in the top of the seventh. Mallory Wulf had two RBI on the night and Kylee Daufeldt two hits with an RBI and a run scored.

But it was the Mustangs who got the last laugh, setting off a wild celebration when Winters crossed home for a second time.

Hadley Millang also drove in a pair, and Winters secured the win by getting the final two outs.

The Comets will face Center Point-Urbana on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. on Yankee Field in a consolation contest.
