No. 1 Dubuque Wahlert survives, advances

After Monday’s Class 3A quarterfinal victory, Dubuque Wahlert has now advanced to three consecutive semifinal contests.

The top-ranked Golden Eagles (36-7 overall) held off a valiant effort from eighth-seeded Center Point-Urbana (25-13) at Rogers Park, scoring the lone run in the contest in the fourth inning and holding off the Stormin’ Pointers for a 1-0 victory.

The Golden Eagles will now face No. 4 PCM on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. on Channel Seeds Field. PCM outlasted West Liberty with some late dramatics on Monday in the quarterfinals, 5-4.

In the last two seasons, the Golden Eagles have come up short in the final four. Last summer, they fell to eventual champion Williamsburg and ended with a win in the third-place game against Benton.

In 2023, they were ousted by Davenport Assumption.

On Monday, Ruth Tauber hit an RBI double to plate Natalie Ruba for the only run of the contest. Julia Roth, Kylie Sieverding, Addison Klein and Ruba had the Golden Eagles’ five hits.

Wahlert’s Julia Roth (15-5) tossed a two-hitter. She struck out 10 Stormin’ Pointers.

Center Point-Urbana’s Mya Hillers (12-8) allowed five hits and an earned run. She struck out four.

Ella Simon and Tara Crowley had the two hits for the Stormin’ Pointers.

Center Point-Urbana will now face No. 5 West Liberty in the consolation round on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. on Yankee Field.
