Kinseth back on top with win in Gowrie

Submitted photo: Ryan Kinseth, a 2002 Fort Dodge Senior High graduate, won the Gowrie Open last Friday at the Gowrie Municipal Golf Course.

GOWRIE — Ryan Kinseth had to go the extra mile and then some to capture his second Gowrie Open Fourth of July golf tournament in three years here on Friday.

The 2002 Fort Dodge Senior High graduate defeated Grant Smith in a six-hole sudden death playoff for the title, matching his efforts here in 2023.

Kinseth and Smith both shot regulation rounds of 67 and championship nines of 34 to tie for the top spot in the 27-hole competition at four-under par 101. After five holes of matching scores, Kinseth finally prevailed against Smith — a current West Des Moines resident and the 2016 Fort Dodge Amateur champion.

Kinseth won here two years ago with a 63-35–98. The former Wartburg College golf standout teammed up with Cory Cummins last week to win the popular Middleton Classic two-player best shot last week in Manson.

Tyler Tiffany of Algona was third (67-35–102) on Friday, and Tyler Cady took fourth (72-34–106).

Kyle Piper of Des Moines aced the 182-yard eighth hole.

There were 75 players in the field.
