A wild ending to a dramatic game advanced Clarksville to the Class 1A semifinal round on Tuesday night at Rogers Park.

What began as a relatively innocuous two-out single up the middle by No. 9 hitter Cate Lodge ended in elation for the second-seeded Indians, who prevailed by a 5-4 final in eight innings against No. 7 Mason City Newman.

Lodge sharply singled up the middle with no one on base. The ball rolled through the centerfielder’s legs, allowing Lodge to advance to second.

Just as Lodge was rounding the base, the rightfielder then slipped and fell as she tried to make the throw into the infield. Lodge turned on the jets, flying around third and crossing home with the winning run standing up.

Clarksville (29-4 overall) plated a pair of runs in both the first and second innings to take a 4-2 lead, but the Knights (24-6) held the Indians scoreless from the third until the chaotic eighth.

Lodge — just an eighth grader — was 2-for-4, just like her 12th-grade sister. Claire Lodge homered and drove in a pair.

Clarksville’s Emmalee Manwarren went 3-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases.

Leah Brown drove in three and had two hits for Newman. Brooke Bleile, Rozlyn Jaspersen and Taylor Brown all added two hits each.

The Knights loaded the bases in their half of the eighth with just one out, but failed to capitalize.

Sydnee Lovrien (26-3) worked all eight innings and allowed only two earned runs for the Indians, who will now face St. Edmond on Wednesday at Iowa Central Field in a 1A semifinal. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.

Newman takes on Wapsie Valley at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Yankee Field in a 1A consolation contest.
