Humboldt reaches substate finals

ALGONA — The Humboldt baseball team scored a resounding 17-9 victory over North Central Conference rival Algona here Monday night, advancing to within a win of the Class 3A state baseball tournament.

The Wildcats (27-6 overall) now head to Memorial Park in Boone on Wednesday to face the Toreadors, who moved on with an 8-0 triumph last night over Waverly-Shell Rock.

Humboldt, who has won 10 in a row, broke the game open with five runs in the fourth, following that up with six in the fifth. Valley Davis was 3-for-5 with a home run, driving in four and scoring three times to lead the way.

Griffin Groat had two doubles as part of his three-hit night that included a pair of RBI and a run scored while Keegan Groat scored three times and had two hits.

Avyon Sutterfield was 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI out of the No. 9 spot in the batting order for the Wildcats. Chase Hansen drove in two and Coen Matson scored twice.

On the mound, Cyler Cirks and Isaiah Busick struck out a combined nine with just one walk.

Tate Slagle, who is headed to Iowa to play baseball in the fall, struck out seven but was charged with nine earned runs. He did have a home run and two doubles, finishing 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Aiden Ulrich had two hits and scored three times while Jaxon Eischen had three RBI and two hits.
