Dodgers pick up road win

STORM LAKE — The Fort Dodge baseball team picked up a non-conference road win over Storm Lake here Tuesday night, 7-2.

Mason Frevert was excellent on the mound for the Dodgers (23-11 overall), tossing a five-hitter with nine strikeouts over six innings. He walked just two batters on the night to out-pitch Storm Lake senior ace Charlie Dvergsten, who has thrown three career no-hitters.

“Mason is a very fun kid to watch pitch,” said Fort Dodge head coach Blake Utley. “He doesn’t throw with a lot of velocity, but has three to four pitches and can keep them guessing.

“He’s coming off of an MCL injury, so he hasn’t thrown a lot of varsity.”

Fort Dodge got to Dvergsten, who did record 10 strikeouts in five-plus innings, with a run in the first before scoring three more in the third. They added on two in the fifth and another in the sixth.

Kolton Schiltz walked, moved to third on a double by Royce Pederson and scored when Jaxson Dencklau drove him in for the first run of the game. Pederson plated Schiltz a second time with a double in the third

Frevert retired the Tornadoes in order in the second and fifth innings.

Pederson had two doubles, as Dencklau and Tru McBride also recorded extra-base hits. Dencklau finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and two steals.

Reggie Pederson had two hits and drove in two, Schiltz went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk, McBride had an RBI and Rylan Kingrey had a hit and scored a run.

“We had a lot of guys hit well,” Utley said. “Rylan Kingrey comes out to start the game and hits a deep flyball agianst one of the best pitchers in the state and it took off from there.

“Kolton, Royce and Jaxson had big nights at the plate.”

The 23 wins for the Dodgers are the most in a season since the 2014 team went 24-20.

Fort Dodge heads to Waterloo East for an Iowa Alliance Conference North division doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Starting at $4.94/week.
