Centennial too much for Valley in opener
Not many teams can say they have the number of Hall of Fame head coach Tom Bakey and West Des Moines Valley.
At least in 2025, the Ankeny Centennial softball squad is able to stake that claim.
The Jaguars scored a fourth victory in 2025 over the Tigers here Monday at the state tournament inside Rogers Park, advancing to the Class 5A semifinals with an impressive 9-0 victory in five innings.
Centennial (33-9 overall) will now face top-ranked Waukee Northwest (38-5) on Iowa Central Field Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The two split a regular season doubleheader, with the Jaguars winning 9-0 after falling, 4-0.
Junior Mady Ott, a Drake University commit, blasted a solo home run to start the big third frame on Monday after Centennial had already three in the first to take control. The Jaguars finished the third with six runs.
Ott was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jaguar star Jordyn Kennedy also had two hits, as did Ava Faber. Lauren Bartine drove in two for Centennial as well.
“It feels great to get past those first-game (state) jitters,” Ott said. “We have seen Valley so we knew what to expect and we made sure to execute.
“This was definitely a confidence booster, because there are a lot of nerves in the first round. It’s great to get through it.”
Inside the circle, Aubrey Sciezinski went the distance, holding the Tigers to just two hits — both of which came in the first inning, when Valley loaded the bases but came up empty. She struck out two and walked just one batter.
“Everyone contributed any way they could,” Sciezinski said. “That kind of shows how we win — we win as a team, not just with one person making every play or scoring every run.”
Centennial’s coaching staff includes former Fort Dodge Senior High standout and current University of Iowa Hawkeye Tory Bennett. Bennett helped the Dodgers to their only state softball championship in program history as a junior in 2021.
Valley (29-12) will take on rival Dowling (15-19) on Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. on Yankee Field in a 5A consolation contest.
