Area athletes earn NCC honors

Both the Algona and Humboldt baseball teams placed four players on the all-North Central Conference first-team, the league announced recently.

Earning honors for the Bulldogs were Aiden Ulrich, Tate Slagle, Jaxon Eischen and Dawson Elsbecker, as all four were unanimous choices.

For the Wildcats, Isaiah Busick, Mason Van Pelt, Keegan Groat and Griffin Groat were selected, with the Groat brothers being unanimous.

Webster City’s Braylon Dyvig was also selected as a unanimous first team pick while St. Edmond’s Grant Galles made the second-team.

Slagle, who has committed to the University of Iowa to play baseball, led the NCC in batting average (.565), home runs (four), RBI (25), hits (26), doubles (eight), total bases (46) and slugging percentage (1.000) at the plate while ranking first on the mound in strikeouts (51) and opponent batting average (.049).

Elsbecker, a sophomore, was second in the league in batting average while Eischen, a junior, was third. Elsbecker also led the league in steals with 11 and runs scored with 25.

Busick, a senior headed to Central College, was tied for second in doubles and third in hits while finishing fourth in pitching strikeouts. Van Pelt tied for first in triples and was third in runs scored.

Griffin Groat, a sophomore, ranked fourth in batting average, as Humboldt reached a Class 3A substate final.

Galles, a junior, hit .316 in NCC-only games for the Gaels, scoring six runs while driving in a pair with 12 total hits, including two doubles.

“Grant had a great year for us,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “He led us in hitting, gave us quality innings on the mound and ran the bases well. He also is one of the better outfielders I have ever coached.

“Grant came to more preseason open gyms than ever before and I think that paid off for him.”
