The Fort Dodge baseball team received two strong pitching performances from Cael Adams and Mason Frevert in a convincing doubleheader sweep over Marshalltown.

Scores of both games were 11-1 in five innings.

With rain expected to hit the area, school officials moved the Iowa Alliance North twinbill from Ed McNeil Field — originally scheduled for Thursday evening — to Rogers Park on Wednesday.

Adams, a freshman, improved to 3-0 on the mound for the Dodgers (21-10 overall, 9-3 in the league) with six strikeouts over five innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run.

“Just super proud of both Cael and Mason,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “I think we’ve proven all year that when we get good pitching, we can be a tough team to beat.

“We knew both of those guys were ready to go, but we weren’t sure how many innings to expect out of them, so for them to go the distance was incredible. They got ahead of hitters and didn’t allow a lot of hard contact while our defense played solid behind them.”

The 21 wins on the season are the most by the FDSH program since 2016, when they won 22. The Dodgers reached 20 victories earlier than any at the school since 2013.

Fort Dodge provided Adams with all the support he would need in the opening inning, as Royce Pederson connected on a two-RBI triple. Pederson, a senior, finished the day with eight runs driven in at the plate.

Senior Rylan Kingrey scored three times, stole two bases and drove in another, sophomore Kolton Schiltz had a triple of his own with two runs and two RBI, and freshman Reggie Pederson plated two, stole two and scored a run.

“Royce has shown what confidence in a senior can do for you at the plate,” Utley said. “He has turned into an extremely good hitter who is a tough out, and he’s driving guys in.

“Both Rylan and Kolton are doing a great job of getting on.”

The Dodgers struck first in game two as well, plating three runs in the first to back Frevert. The sophomore also went the distance with eight strikeouts and just three hits allowed for his first win of the year.

Royce Pederson again drove in four with a double, a run scored, two steals and a walk. Kingrey had two hits, two RBI, two runs and two steals, Schiltz scored twice, and sophomore Cal Pederson added an RBI and a stolen base.

“Everybody produced for us and we were able to come away with two good wins,” Utley said. “Now, we can get ready for the stretch run starting next week.”

Fort Dodge scored five runs in the first, four in the second and 11 in the third innings of the two games combined. The Dodgers have now won 48 of the last 61 games played with Marshalltown, including 10 in a row.

Up next for Fort Dodge will be IAC North division leader Ames on the road Monday beginning at 5 p.m.
