The fourth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team made quick work of Southeast Valley here Tuesday night, posting a 12-0 victory in four innings.
With puddles from constant rain throughout the day forming on the grass field at Rogers Park, the non-conference affair was shifted to the all-turf one used by Iowa Central.
Sophia Schlienz got things started in the first for the Gaels (5-2 overall) with a two-RBI single to center. After Ansley Oswald drove in Schlienz, Mariah Myers started the second inning scoring with a three-run blast
Schlienz added another RBI by plating Lauren Gibb and Oswald drove her in with her second hit of the evening.
“We set the tone right out of the gates and didn’t let up,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “I liked our approach at the plate and our pitchers threw strikes. We didn’t have any mistakes in the field and just played a really solid game overall.”
Schlienz finished 2-for-3 with four RBI, three steals and two runs scored. Myers drove in three and scored twice. Faith Shirbroun, Rihanna Myers and Ella Vandi all had two runs.
Inside the circle, eighth-grader Breckyn Ulrich got the start, striking out one over two innings while fellow eighth-grader Rihanna Myers recorded the final six outs with three strikeouts. Neither Ulrich or Myers allowed a hit or walk, as the lone Southeast Valley baserunner came on a hit-by-pitch.
“You make the game much, much easier when you play it like that,” Shirbroun said. “We’ve had some nights that we’ve had to grind and work for everything, but those situations are what got us to this point and will make us a stronger team by the end of the season.”
Ansley Oswald finished with two RBI to go along with her two hits. Rihanna Myers worked two walks.
Myrah Lemon finished with a hit, a run scored, an RBI and a walk.
Hadley Oswald, who missed the last several games after suffering an injury, added a hit and drove in a run in her return to the lineup.
Karley Rae Smith was the lone Jaguar to reach base. Southeast Valley is now 4-2.
St. Edmond returns to action on Friday when they host Webster City in North Central Conference play beginning at 7:30 p.m.
