No. 7 Gaels strike early, often in win

For the second consecutive night, the seventh-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team put up a big number, dominating Clarion-Goldfield/Dows 19-0 in four innings.

Lauren Gibb drove in three runs and scored three times, Mariah Myers scored three times and Faith Shirbroun stole three bases with two runs scored for the Gaels (12-3 overall, 5-1 in North Central Conference).

Inside the circle, Toryn Helle and Rihanna Myers combined to record eight strikeouts without allowing a hit or a walk. Helle went the first two, striking out six while also going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.

“Honestly, it’s tough to take much away from this other than we kept our momentum going heading into a big weekend,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “We didn’t swing at pitches that we shouldn’t swing at despite the walks and our pitchers did a nice job of throwing strikes.

“We know we are going to be tested coming up with our schedule, so it’s good to keep our rhythm as much as we can.”

St. Edmond put up 11 runs in the first inning, sending 15 batters to the plate against the Cowgirls (0-10, 0-6). The Gaels were walked eight times and had three batters hit by pitches.

Hadley Oswald drove in a pair with a double that landed at the outfield fence, while Gibb recorded a two-RBI triple. Ansley Oswald had a two-RBI hit in the first.

That was more than enough support for Helle, as the freshman struck out the side in both of her innings around a dropped third strike and an error.

“I thought Toryn did a really good job out there,” Shirbroun said. “She was in command and pounded the strike zone. Rihanna came in and gave us two great innings as well.”

Since a tough 6-5 loss on the road to Clear Lake to begin the week, the Gaels have scored 42 runs in their last three games. They have plated runs in 10 of the 13 innings they have came to the plate in.

Myrah Lemon, Rihanna Myers, Ella Vandi and Greenlee Crimmins all scored twice.

The schedule will pick up starting Saturday with two games set for the Van Meter Tournament. St. Edmond takes on Treynor at 2 p.m. and top-ranked (Class 2A) Van Meter at 4 p.m., with games scheduled against No. 2 (4A) North Polk, ninth-rated (5A) Muscatine, 11th-ranked (5A) Southeast Polk, top-rated (5A) Waukee Northwest and Bettendorf in the coming week.
