Musingwini makes rugby history with Algoe award

Iowa Central’s Takudzwa Musingwini made history, becoming the first member of the rugby program to be given the Algoe Award, which goes to the top male athlete.

Musingwini earned first-team All-American honors in 15s along with being a first-team academic all-region selection for the Tritons. He was also the “Man of the Tournament” at an event hosted by Notre Dame.

“The essence of this award is about how an athlete represented Iowa Central athletics with their abilities and character,” ICCC head rugby coach Brent Nelson said. “One of his most endearing qualities is how dedicated he is to his teammates and coaches.

“As far as rugby goes, he is a cheat code. It’s just fun to watch him play. Taku is not only one of the top players in the country in D1 rugby, he’s one of the best humans I have ever met.”

Musingwini converted 98 percent of his conversions and penalties and was the second leading point scorer at the College Rugby Championships, where he made the all-tournament team.

Iowa Central reached the semifinals of the Big Rivers Conference Tournament for the first time and placed sixth at the CRC event. They earned wins over schools such as Iowa State, Clemson, Iowa, Nebraska and Notre Dame in both 15s and 7s.

He was the first unanimous most valuable player in program history this past year and will play with the Zimbabwe national team during the summer.

“Taku is humble and respectful and carries himself with dignity and class,” Nelson said. “He volunteered for every single community service project we (rugby) were involved in.

“I think it’s very fitting he is the first player in the history of the rugby program to receive this honor. He inspires people to be better versions of themselves.”

Among those who have earned the award include St. Edmond graduates Joey Flattery and Tim Flattery, and Fort Dodge Senior High grad Will Kenny.

Starting at $2.99/week.
