Huseman back on top with victory at Habhab Amateur

Andrew Huseman felt right at home again on Sunday in more ways than one.
Huseman captured the fifth Travis J. Habhab Amateur title of his career at Lakeside Golf Course, carding a four-under par 104 and prevailing thanks in large part to a sparkling 33 in the championship round.
The 30-year-old Huseman has deep ties to Fort Dodge, where he has established himself as a dominant golfer on the amateur scene over the course of the last decade-plus. The current Ankeny resident racked up four Habhab Lakeside Am crowns between 2013-19, but hadn’t won since.
That all changed yesterday on a windy, mild afternoon.
“I’m happy with how I played overall, especially considering (Saturday) was kind of a struggle (in preparation),” Huseman said. “Really everything was solid for me and I was able to manage the wind for the most part.
“I have so many great memories of playing in Fort Dodge and being in Fort Dodge. I’ve had a couple of years (recently) where it hasn’t worked out to come back, or my game wasn’t where it needed to be. It feels really good to be back in this spot (at the top) at my home away from home.”
Huseman finished two strokes ahead of Clear Lake’s Eli Anderson, a recently-graduated standout and the co-North Central Conference champion this past spring. Anderson led by a single shot heading into the championship nine.
Anderson (two-under par 70) and Huseman (71) were the only players in the red after regulation play, with Cody Jaeschke of Fort Dodge right in the hunt as well (72). Anderson and Jaeschke both carded 36s in the championship round.
Huseman had a double bogey at 12 earlier in the day, but finished strong with birdies at 17 and 18. That momentum carried over into his three-under effort down the stretch to seal the title.
Huseman birdied holes 10, 12, 13, 15 and 18 in the final nine, with bogeys at 11 and 17.
“There were a couple of pins that were down wind and made it really touchy with the wind,” Huseman said. “I had a few three-putts, but offset that with some birdies.”
Jaeschke (even-par 108) was third overall, followed by Charlie West (74-35–109) and Scott Spiers (73-36–109). Steve Cero of Humboldt took sixth (76-35–111).
Austin Morrow of Fort Dodge (74-38–112), Jordan Morrow (74-39–113), Kevin Ault (74-40–114) and Robert Flattery (73-41–114) rounded out the Top-10.
The tournament is played in honor of Habhab, a 2001 Fort Dodge Senior High graduate who passed away unexpectedly in 2014 at just 32 years old. This event was named after the long-time Lakeside clubhouse staffer and grounds crew worker a year later in 2015.
“It was a great day honoring my buddy,” Lakeside grounds superintendent Chad Graaf said. “We all miss that guy. He was a one of one.”
