Gaels top 5A Bulldogs
WAUKEE — The seventh-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team ended play in the Jack North Tournament with an impressive victory here Saturday.
After falling to top-ranked (5A) and host Waukee Northwest in the opener, 8-0, the Gaels (14-9 overall) knocked off Bettendorf (14-12), 6-5.
Lauren Gibb was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Mariah Myers scored twice. Toryn Helle, who earned the win inside the circle, also helped her own cause with a pair of RBI.
Gibb and Myers both recorded doubles, as Gibb and Faith Shirbroun each had a steal. Shirbroun and Ella Vandi both scored a run as Helle and Ansley Oswald added hits.
“It was great to see us score a victory over a 5A program,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “This is obviously a difficult tournament with many quality, bigger schools, but I thought we competed well throughout the two days.”
Bettendorf has been in and out of the 5A Top-15 this season.
In the game vs. Waukee Northwest, Myers had two hits while both Gibb and Myrah Lemon each added one. Helle spun a scoreless inning against the Wolves.
St. Edmond returns to North Central Conference action against Hampton-Dumont/CAL Monday night at Rogers Park.
