Gaels drop doubleheader

There are a handful of things that can go wrong in a baseball game that will drive head coaches wild.

Right now, Mike Szalat is seeing a lot of things happening with his St. Edmond team.

The Gaels dropped a North Central Conference doubleheader here Monday night at Rogers Park to Clarion-Goldfield/Dows by scores of 4-3 and 8-7.

A run in the fifth broke a 3-3 tie for the Cowboys in the opener, while the visitors erased a 7-4 deficit with two in the sixth and two more in the seventh to walk-off with the sweep.

“I know this is going to sound harsh,” Szalat said. “And I know these are high school kids. I get all that. But if we can’t play this game with the accountability that you need to have, we need to make changes.

“I completely understand that there are bigger things going on in the world than high school baseball. But we’ve committed our lives to this in the summer. Some people are really committed to this things and other people don’t seem to necessarily be doing the same.”

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (7-4 overall, 2-4 in league) tallied 16 hits, as Tristan Kakacek and Jacob Ruba both had two in the opener. Kakacek also stole three bases with a run scored and an RBI, as Owen Sweeney earned the win on the mound with five strikeouts.

For the Gaels (1-9, 0-4), Blake Bartlett and Kade Schlegel each had a hit with an RBI, as Jack McElroy and Kinnick Henning both stole two bases.

Maddox Shirbroun got the start, striking out eight over five-plus innings of work on the mound.

“The harsh reality is these guys are young men who we are asking to perform a job,” Szalat said. “You can’t just keep going out there and doing the same things over and over again. And it isn’t the young kids like the eighth-graders who are doing that; it’s the upperclassmen who we should be able to count on making the plays we expect.

“We hit the ball well. We ran the bases well. We pitched well. We did all of those things well enough to win both games and we didn’t win either.”

Chaz Lane had a triple and drove in four, finishing 3-for-4 to help spark the rally in the nightcap for the Cowboys. Huxley Lingenfelter stole two bases and Sweeney scored twice.

Henning and Julian Blanco both drove in two runs for St. Edmond, as McElroy had two hits and struck out nine over six innings.

Grant Galles scored twice and sstole a base, driving in another run.

The Gaels are set to host Southeast Valley Tuesday night.
