Fort Dodge takes down No. 1 Pleasant Valley
WEST DES MOINES — The Pleasant Valley softball team had scored 120 runs in bursting out of the gates with an 8-1 record and a No. 1 ranking in Class 5A.
Fort Dodge’s Lucy Porter silenced those bats in impressive fashion on Saturday.
The senior twirled a shutout gem against the Spartans as the sixth-ranked (4A) Dodgers prevailed by a 3-0 final at the West Des Moines Shootout.
Head coach Andi Adams’ squad was caught from behind by fourth-rated (4A) Norwalk in their second game, 5-3, and had to settle for a split on the afternoon.
Porter was brilliant, striking out seven in her five innings of work. The Dodger defense was flawless behind her, and the offense did enough to scratch across three runs.
“Lucy was amazing,” Adams said of the Minnesota State recruit. “Pleasant Valley has incredible hitters, but good pitching can beat a great offense if you hit your spots and stay ahead in counts. Lucy did that.
“She did an incredible job. She wanted to show people that she’s an ace, and this was a big stage to do it.”
Senior Meah McCaleb recorded two hits — including a double — and classmate Cadence Touney had the only RBI for FDSH. Eighth-grader Macy Wills contributed two hits and a run scored.
The Dodgers (6-2 overall) only struck out once.
Fort Dodge plated three runs in the first inning against University of Iowa commit Carly Brewer, but the Warriors rallied and then plated single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to prevail and stay unbeaten at 12-0.
Brewer and Nyah Hulbert homered for Norwalk, with Brewer driving in three runs. Hope Alstott led off the game with a single, but Brewer didn’t allow another hit the rest of the way.
“(Starting pitcher) Aubrey (Alstott) battled for us,” Adams said. “She pitched well for the most part, but a few mistakes were the difference. She’s still learning as just a freshman, but she’s such a competitor. She wants it.
“Our kids have such good chemistry. They really enjoy being around each other. That really makes a difference.”
Wills injured her arm crashing into the wall trying to save a ball from going over the fence. She will be out for at least the Ames doubleheader on Monday at Rogers Park.
The Dodgers and 14th-ranked (5A) Little Cyclones (10-1, 6-0) square off at 5 p.m. on Diamond 1.
