Fort Dodge again found its offensive rhythm on the baseball field Tuesday.
In a clash between programs experiencing plenty of success deep into June, head coach Blake Utley’s Dodgers posted double-digit runs for the 11th time already this season in a 22-7, four-inning victory over Humboldt.
“We had so many great at-bats (last night),” Utley said. “Humboldt is a good team, and they started off quickly. Our guys just kept moving forward, knowing our offense would get going if we stayed with the approach we’ve had.”
Humboldt (15-5 overall) quickly built a 5-0 lead inside Dodger Stadium. Sophomore catcher Chase Hansen drilled a pitch high over the left-field ivy, plating three runs in the opening frame. Hansen’s round-tripper highlighted a six-hit Wildcat attack.
Fort Dodge answered and then some, scoring 22 of the contest’s final 24 runs. A three-run double that sailed into the left-centerfield gap by junior Jaxson Dencklau, coupled with a two-run single by sophomore Bo Marsh, ignited an 11-run, 15-batter opening frame.
Senior Rylan Kingrey crushed a two-run long ball in the second, finding nearly the exact same spot that Hansen had sent his shot in the top of the first. After HHS answered with a two-run rally in the third to cut the deficit to 15-7, a seven-run outburst in the home half supplied the final knockout blow.
Kingrey just missed a second homer, blasting a two-run double off the right-center wall to drive in two.
Dencklau then added to his big night with a two-run single. He finished with six RBI.
Marsh drove in three and had three hits. Kingrey and Royce Pederson both added three RBI with their multiple hits.
Cal Pederson was 2-for-3 with three runs and two driven in. Kolton Schiltz scored four times.
“Our pitchers battled all night,” he noted. “We still need to work to elevate that part of our total effort. It’s getting closer…we know those guys can do it. A good example is (senior) Royce striking out three in a row after walking two to start the fourth.”
Fort Dodge, now 14-8, moves into a run of five successive road games beginning with a trip to Ottumwa on Thursday. Humboldt is back at it quickly, too, as the Wildcats face off with North Central Conference rival Webster City at home on Wednesday.
