FDSH softball uses long ball to win big

MASON CITY — The Fort Dodge softball team muscled up in another doubleheader sweep of Iowa Alliance Conference rival Mason City here on Monday.
The eighth-ranked (Class 4A) Dodgers slugged five home runs in taking down the Riverhawks by scores of 14-3 and 9-1.
Head coach Andi Adams’ squad had only gone deep 12 times total in its first 21 games before last night. In the opener alone, seniors Meah McCaleb and Lucy Porter cleared the fence, as did sophomores Ellie Doster and Hope Alstott.
Doster added another in the nightcap — her second of the season as well — as Fort Dodge (16-7 overall, 9-1 in the IAC North) extended its win streak over the Riverhawks (4-13, 1-7) to 32 in a row dating back to 2017.
“It was great to see everyone contributing (offensively),” said FDSH head coach Andi Adams, who now has an 87-6 career record against Mason City. “We don’t hit four homers in a game very often. But we need to build some momentum and confidence.
“I thought our approach was better, our pitchers did a nice job, and we had the chance to play a lot of kids. We’re going to keep focusing on what each player brings to the table and try to maximize that the rest of the way. It’s a great group that is very supportive of each other.”
Alstott was 3-for-3 with four runs and two RBI in the first contest, with McCaleb, Doster and Porter all driving in three.
Maeleena Meyer, Teryn Rippentrop and Alstott all stole two bases.
Porter, senior Katie Mason and eighth-grader Emersyn Lara handled the pitching duties in the four-inning rout.
It took the Dodgers a while to get going in the nightcap. The score was 1-1 heading into the fifth, when Fort Dodge erupted for five runs. The visitors then tacked on three insurance scores in the sixth to end it.
Senior Cadence Touney was 3-for-4 with a double. McCaleb drove in three more runs.
Rippentrop was 2-for-2, and Doster had two hits, including the homer.
Alstott stole three bases.
Freshman Aubrey Alstott and Sydney Carver combined on a two-hitter with five total strikeouts.
Fort Dodge is back in action on Tuesday at Rogers Park against Des Moines Lincoln (3-22) at 4 p.m. The twinbill was moved up due to predicted inclement weather on Wednesday.
