Dodgers topple 5A City High

ALBURNETT — The eighth-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team earned a split here Friday at the opening day of the Linn-Mar/Alburnett Tournament against a pair of 5A schools.

After besting ninth-ranked Iowa City High, 8-1, the Dodgers fell to No. 7 Pleasant Valley, 2-0.

Fort Dodge (21-8 overall) broke things open early vs. the Little Hawks with a six-run second, as Cadence Touney added a solo home run an inning later.

“We just absolutely crushed the ball against a very good City High team,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “We’ve been getting production from the top of our lineup, so when we get it from the other kids like Cadence, that just makes us so much more difficult to pitch to.”

Touney, who signed with Iowa Central earlier this week to play softball, finished 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Maeleena Meyer drove in a pair while Hope Alstott had a triple.

Alstott, Meah McCaleb and Ellie Doster all drove in a run with a hit, as McCaleb added a run scored and a stolen base.

Lucy Porter picked up the win inside the circle, allowing just four hits with five strikeouts.

“Lucy was amazing,” Adams said. “Honestly, both our pitchers did great. We just couldn’t string anything together against Pleasant Valley.”

Pleasant Valley got one across in the first and another in the fifth, as the Dodgers were held to just five hits. Porter had two of those while Alstott had a stolen base.

Aubrey Alstott allowed just seven hits, striking out three Spartans.

This was the second meeting between Fort Dodge and Pleasant Valley this year, as the Dodgers claimed a 3-0 victory back at the West Des Moines Valley Shootout.

Starting at $2.99/week.
