Dodgers finish with shutout

MARION — The eighth-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team wrapped up play here Saturday at the Alburnett/Linn-Mar Invitational by placing seventh overall.

After falling to No. 5 (5A) Johnston, 11-3, the Dodgers concluded the two-day event with a 5-0 victory over Ankeny.

Fort Dodge broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the third vs. the Hawks before adding three more in the sixth. Lucy Porter pitched all six innings, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts.

Grace Nichols had a double and two hits, Hope Alstott, Meah McCaleb, Ashlyn Wills, Porter and Teryn Rippentrop each drove in runs while Alstott, Ellie Doster, Wills, Cadence Touney, Maeleena Meyer and Rippentrop each recorded a hit.

“Lucy really bounced back from the Johnston game and dominated,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “This tournament is a loaded field so we knew there would be some ups and some downs, but I thought the girls battled through and played well.”

Wills and Alstott each stole a base against Ankeny.

Johnston quickly struck with six in the first vs. the Dodgers, who battled back with three in the second. Nichols had another double and drove in a run while Alstott and Meyer each recorded an RBI.

Alstott, McCaleb, Doster, Porter, Meyer and Rippentrop all recorded a hit.

Fort Dodge returns to action Monday when they head to Ames for an Iowa Alliance North doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
