Dodgers can’t slow North in baseball at Rogers Park

The Fort Dodge baseball team was unable to end a busy week with a win as they lost to Sioux City North as part of the Iowa Central Big Tuna Classic at Rogers Park on Friday.

Playing their seventh game in five days, the Dodgers (12-8 overall) dropped an 11-2 contest to the North Stars (15-6).

“It’s been a busy week,” said Fort Dodge head coach Blake Utley. “We played a lot of games this week and the guys could feel it.”

In Friday’s contest, the North Stars jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings with a five-run second. The Dodgers then plated two runs of their own to get on the board.

Another five-run inning in the sixth, though, was too much for the Dodgers to overcome.

“We didn’t start the second inning well, loading the bases and then they had a bases-clearing triple,” Utley said. “We scored two runs to get back into it, but they responded again.”

Kal Chamberlain came up with the big hit in the inning with the three-bagger.

“North is a veteran ballclub,” Utley said. “They have seven upperclassmen and we’re using seven underclassmen.”

Eighth-grader Hayden Porter started the rally in the third inning with two outs. Porter found the line in right field and motored to third for a triple.

Sophomore Tru McBride then plated Porter with a double.

Freshman Reggie Pederson scored the Dodgers’ other run with an RBI single, scoring McBride.

Fort Dodge’s Kolton Schiltz, who is third in Class 4A and fourth in the entire state for hit by pitches, was plunked for the 12th time.

The Dodgers had seven hits on the night, led by McBride and Pederson with two each.

Fort Dodge, which is currently third in Class 4A with 80 stolen bases, had two swipes against the North Stars.

“We hit the ball,” Utley said. “Most of the week we were able to get runners in scoring position, but we weren’t always able to plate them.

“We are continuing to work on good at bats.”

Chamberlain had two hits for the Stars, as did Connor Schultz.

Fort Dodge is back in action on Monday when they host Des Moines East in a doubleheader at Ed McNeil Field. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
