The Webster City baseball team received strong pitching efforts from juniors Braylon Dyvig and Gavin Griffith to secure a doubleheader sweep over St. Edmond here Tuesday night at Rogers Park.
Scores were 8-5 and 9-3.
Dyvig went five-plus, striking out 11 to improve to 2-0 on the year for the Lynx in the opener. Griffith worked six-plus innings of the nightcap in the North Central Conference twinbill, striking out six for his second win of the season.
Webster City (4-3 overall, 4-0 in the NCC) scored runs in eight of the 13 innings in which they came to the plate, belting out 22 hits.
For the Gaels (0-5, 0-4), they showed life late in both, scoring all eight of their runs in the final three innings of the games.
“To me, the defensive miscues we had were what really hurt us,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “There are always so many things going on in a baseball game that you really have to be focused at all times.
“It makes a big difference having that ‘in-game’ experience, because you are able to just naturally react.”
Dyvig was perfect until hitting Koleman Hanson with one out in the fifth. He recorded six consecutive strikeouts at one point, allowing just a single to eighth-grader Blake Bartlett before departing.
Bartlett’s hit drove in both Grant Galles and courtesy runner Garrett Royster. Galles and Maddox Shirbroun worked back-to-back walks on Dyvig.
Ethan Swisher would also walk and score in the frame.
Matthew Tesdahl had three hits, while Alex Staley and Dyvig both drove in two to pace Webster City.
“I like the way this group continues to fight and play for each other,” Szalat said. “They do a great job of picking each other up, and that’s important because there are going to be lots of ups and downs during the course of a baseball season.
“We’ve just got to keep working and correct the things we can correct.”
In the nightcap, eighth-grader Julian Blanco collected two hits and drove in a run for St. Edmond, Shirbroun had two hits, and both Swisher and Kade Schlegel had an RBI.
For the Lynx, Carter Mickelson was 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored and four steals, Tesdahl had two hits and scored twice.
Alex Staley was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in.
Next action for the Gaels will be a trip to Manson Northwest Webster on Thursday. Webster City hosts Newell-Fonda on Friday night.
