DES MOINES — For Matt Condon and Rachel Schany, the state track and field meet provides another opportunity to showcase their all-around skills.

Both Condon, a Manson Northwest Webster senior, and Schany, a junior for Emmetsburg, have qualified in four individual events for the Class 2A portion of the championships, which begin here Thursday inside Drake Stadium.

The Cougars have a total of 10 entries at state including Alyssa Richman, a senior who was the 3,000 runner-up last year and placed fifth in the 1,500.

For Condon, he competed in three events a season ago here, placing eighth in the 400 hurdles, high jump and long jump. This time, he’s added the 110 hurdles to his plate.

In terms of district numbers, Condon is seeded first in the 400 hurdles (54.38), the high jump (6-foot-5) and the long jump (22-6.5), along with being 12th in the 110 hurdles (15.40).

“Doing four events this year will be busy but I feel prepared and ready for it,” Condon said. “Seeing my name seeded high in the rankings definitely adds pressure, but hopefully that will help me compete better.

“Going into my last meet, I feel ready to compete and am hoping that I can do better than past years.”

Condon has competed in four events at numerous meets this past season including the Twin Lakes Conference championships. There, he won four titles in both hurdles along with the long jump and high jump.

Joining Condon and Richman in indivdual events for MNW will be Jack Hoeppner in the 400, Kyla Egli in the long jump and Ava Moline in the discus. The Cougar girls are in the distance medley, which Egli and Richman are slated to both run on.

Richman had the second-fastest district time in the 3,000 and third-best 1,500. She is also ranked in those same positions from the regular season. Egli is ninth in the long jump and Hoeppner 20th in the 400.

Schany is a returning state champion in the high jump while also placing third last year in the long jump. She added a third state medal by finishing sixth in the 400 and was 14th in the 200 prelims.

This year, Schany is back in four, subbing in the 800 for the 200. She is seeded second in the high jump, sixth in the long jump, 20th in the 400 and 24th in the 800.

She has cleared a 1A-best 5-7 with Lawton-Bronson’s Addison Smith while her leap of 18-4.25 during the season is third-best.

MaKayla Beisel of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows is in three events and has Top-6 seeds in all three in 2A. She is third in the high jump, fourth in the 400 hurdles and sixth in the 100 hurdles.

Algona has eight events seeded in the Top-8 with the distance medley second, the 4×200 third, the 4×100 fith, Macy Knapp (800), Gavin Weber (800) and Max Nevitt (discus) all seventh and William Weichert (100) and Evan Allie (200) eighth in 3A.

South Central Calhoun’s Tristin Gorden (discus) and Redge Potts (3,200) are both seeded second in 2A while Emmetsburg’s Byron Maina is fourth in the high jump.

Tyra Schupbach of West Bend-Mallard is seeded third in the 1A 3,000 while Newell-Fonda Mareni Brabec is sixth in the same event. The Mustang 4×400 is fifth.

Amaury Thomas of Bishop Garrigan is fourth in the 1A discus.
