ENID, Okla. — The Iowa Central baseball team fell to top-seeded Pasco-Hernando State College of Florida in the second round of the NJCAA World Series on Sunday.

After dominating their opener with a 15-1 victory over No. 9 seed Frederick Saturday night, the eighth-seeded and 13th-ranked Tritons ran into a buzzsaw versus the No. 1 Bobcats. Head coach Eric Stein’s squad, which is now 45-16 overall, will face 12th-seeded Lackawanna College (34-17) of Pennsylvania on Monday at 7 p.m. in an elimination game.

The Iowa Central bats left a huge first impression in the opener. Spencer Pederson homered and drove in four runs while scoring three times, and Bryson Carpenter also went deep while knocking in three.

Sawyer Stein added three runs scored and a pair of hits for the Tritons, who had a breakout seven-run third inning. Cooper Nicholson drove in a pair.

Chayton Fischer tripled and scored twice. Luke Bohonek doubled and crossed home twice as well.

That was more than enough support for starting pitcher Ryan Ohm (8-2), who worked all five innings and scattered four hits. Ohm struck out five.

Adam Horst was tagged for seven runs in just two innings of work for Frederick, a squad out of Maryland with a record of 51-12.

Pasco-Hernando State (49-10) plated two runs in the first and four more in the third on Sunday evening. Iowa Central pulled back within 7-3 in the fifth, but the Bobcats ended the contest early with a six-run bottom of the frame.

Pederson went deep again for the Tritons, while Fischer drove in a pair with a double. Nicholson also had a two-bagger.

Clay Thompson and Grant Jordan homered for PHSC. Thompson drove in three.

Brandon Durfee was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.

The Bobcats advanced to the quarterfinal round with the victory.

Lackawanna was edged by fifth-seeded Madison in its tourney opener, 7-6.

Iowa Central is in the NJCAA Div. II World Series field for the first time since 2010.
