The St. Edmond boys golf team put together one of their best rounds of the season here Wednesday at the CYO held at Lakeside Golf Course.

Behind a 79 from Ty Mericle and an 80 by Carson Bargfrede, the Gaels finished third overall behind Carroll Kuemper and Le Mars Gehlen. Bishop Garrigan was fourth and Remsen St. Mary’s fifth.

On the girls side, the Golden Bears placed first by 15 strokes over Carroll Kuemper. Sioux City Heelan was third.

Remsen St. Mary’s finished fourth followed by Le Mars Gehlen and St. Edmond.

Mericle ended the 18-hole event tied for the overall lead with Kuemper’s Braxton Vonnahme and Dylan Lubben of Gehlen. The tiebreaker between the three went to Vonnahme, as he earned medalist honors with Lubben second and Mericle third.

“I think we’ve had several tiebreakers with both Ty and Jack (McElroy) where it just didn’t go in our favor,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “It’s unfortunate because Ty played well enough to win it. He had an excellent round and really had it all going.”

Mericle tallied eight pars and two birdies — at Nos. 10 and 15. He carded a 39 on the back nine, with a 40 on the front.

Bargfrede, out for the first time this spring, was within the top of the leaderboard throughout the day. The junior tallied a birdie on No. 1 and No. 5 to go along with a closing birdie at 18.

“Carson really broke out,” Dillon said. “You could see it coming, and it was great to see him out there playing with a swagger and confidence about himself.”

McElroy finished in a tie for 12th with an 86. Gael teammate Max Nguyen tied for 19th, while Kinnick Henning was 21st and Landon Saathoff tied for 24th.

Nguyen shot a 90, Henning a 91 and Saathoff a 98.

“Max and Kinnick had good days,” Dillon said. “Jack had a couple bad holes that got away from him, but he played well other than that. We’ve got to keep cleaning those crooked numbers up. Once we do that, I feel like we’ll be able to compete with anybody in Class 1A.

“To be within seven shots of Kuemper and six of Gehlen is a pretty big deal for us.”

Teague Alesch had the low round for Bishop Garrigan, placing tied for seventh with an 82. Isaac DeLange tied for 14th with Carter Schwab in a tie for 17th overall.

On the girls’ side, Gabby Buscher of Garrigan was the runner-up to Kuemper’s Addy Beiter.

Beiter fired an 82. Buscher shot a 90 with teammate Hanna Merron one shot back for third.

Addison Kuper finished eighth, Ava Snider was ninth and Reece Kemna tied for 13th for the Golden Bears.

St. Edmond’s top finish came courtesy of Nora Lee, who shot a 112 to tie for 21st overall. Azayla Hill was 31st, Irelyn Derrig finished 33rd, Ann Veneziano was 34th, Khue Nguyen was 35th and Cora Anderson placed 36th.

The Gael boys will host Webster City on Thursday, while the girls are on the road for a dual with the Lynx.

Starting at $2.99/week.
