Gold again for Schany; Gorden, Beisel both runner-ups

DES MOINES — Rachel Schany made sure that for another year, no one could say they are better than her in the Class 2A high jump.
Schany captured her second consecutive state title here Friday inside Drake Stadium, as the Emmetsburg junior cleared 5-foot-6.
She was the only athlete in the group to go over the bar at 5-6, doing so on her second attempt after easily clearing the first four heights.
On Thursday, Schany placed third in both the long jump and 400-meter run for the E-Hawks. In her three state trips, Schany has qualified for 10 events, placing in the Top-10 nine times with two firsts, three thirds and will run the 800 on Saturday.
“It’s always a great experience to jump at the blue oval but (Friday) was definitely extra special,” Schany said. “I am so glad I was able to defend my title but I definitely couldn’t have done it alone. I owe a big thank you to my family, coaches and friends who have supported me through it all.”
Also in field events, South Central Calhoun’s Tristin Gorden scored her highest finish at state. The sophomore placed second in the 2A discus at 131-8.
Gorden, who was 15th in the shot put, had her best throw on her third attempt of the opening flight. She also went 130-11 in the championship flight.
As a freshman, Gorden was ninth in the shot and 24th in the discus.
MaKayla Beisel of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows added a silver to her resume, as the senior placed second in the 400 hurdles in 2A.
Beisel, who also competed in 100 hurdles and high jump, had a new personal record with a time of 1:05.55. She was 10th in the 100 hurdle prelims in 15.83 and placed 13th in the high jump after clearing 5-0.
Algona
The Bulldogs had two individuals and two relays in 3A action, as Maya Lentz was 13th in the long jump and Reagan Haynes finished 18th in the shot put.
Lentz had a best leap of 16-2 while Haynes had a best throw of 34-8.5.
The 4×200 relay of Lillian Allie, Kaitlyn Burns, Lentz and Natalie Johnson turned in a season best time of 1:45.29 to place 16th. Allie, Burns, Summer Thompson and Johnson had a season best in the 4×100 prelims at 50.17 to finish 18th.
Bishop Garrigan
Brooke Ludwig had a throw of 110-8 to finish 10th in the 1A discus for the Golden Bears. Teammate Jenna Peterson was unable to get a mark.
The 4×200 relay of Zoe Montag, Cate Birkey, Ava Roethler and Madelyn Tigges placed 14th with a season-best time of 1:49.86.
East Sac County
Wendie Veit earned a medal in the 2A 400 hurdles, clocking a personal-best time of 1:06.04 to place sixth overall.
Miranda Gerdes was 20th in the discus with a throw of 94-0.
Manson Northwest Webster
Ava Moline scored a Top-8 finish in the 2A discus, adding to the team point total for the Cougars. Moline was eighth with a throw of 111-7.
Kyla Egli, Lucy Kohnen, Ava Messerly and Alyssa Richman clocked a season best time of 4:20.05 in the distance medley relay to place 14th overall.
Humboldt
The distance medley relay of Gracey May, Landry Lash, Bella Metli and Brynn Malo clocked their best time of the season to cross the tape in 22nd in 4:25.46 for the Wildcats.
Newell-Fonda
Ava Vie, Kinzee Hinders, Ellie Sievers and Anna Mercer were all key players for the state runner-up Mustang basketball team. They came together on the track Friday to place fourth in 1A in the 4×200, turning in a season-best time of 1:47.29.
Lindsey Wolf, a senior, was ninth in the high jump for Newell-Fonda, clearing 5-0.
The 4×400 just missed out on advancing to the finals, placing ninth in prelims with a time of 4:08.46, which was a season-best. Martensdale-St. Marys grabbed the final spot at 4:08.01.
Sievers, Hinders, Rylee Hogrefe and Mercer ran the relay.
Pocahontas Area
Ava Ford was 10th in the 2A discus for the Indians with a best of 108-10.
The Indians also finished 10th in the 4×100 prelims behind a 51.01 by Amanda Davis, Halee Hauswirth, Natalie Sommerlot and Khloe Mefferd.
Webster City
Adysen Poppen and Jakaela Cherry competed in the 3A shot put for the Lynx on Friday.
Poppen, a senior, was 21st with a throw of 34-0 while Cherry, a junior, finished 22nd with a toss of 33-11.5.
West Bend-Mallard
The 4×100 relay of Lilly Morey, Payton Akridge, Allie Fehr and Maddie Fehr went a season best 51.97 to close the year in 16th for the prelims of 1A.
