Gibb advances to semifinals

WATERLOO — Lauren Gibb extended her high school tennis career by another day, advancing to the Class 1A state semifinals.
Gibb, the first St. Edmond girl to make the final four since Ellen Chalstrom in 2013, will face defending champion Gabriella Fleming of Cedar Rapids Xavier on Saturday here at Byrnes Park beginning at 10 a.m.
In the other semifinal, Pella’s Claire Smock meets Kate Holton of Waterloo Columbus. The finals are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. with the third-place match taking place at the same time.
Gibb started her day with a convincing 6-4, 6-0 victory over Smock’s teammate, Abby Hietbrink in the opening round.
She was matched up with No. 4 seed Gabi Jacobs of Shenandoah next, posting a 6-3, 6-4 triumph to advance.
“I knew if I played my game and focused, (making the semifinals) was achievable,” Gibb said. “I am super excited to be competing for a spot in the finals because I really wanted to prove myself and show the state of Iowa what I am capable of.
“My two matches went well. Definitely some things to work on, but nothing too major. I am ready to go for Saturday and am excited to see what the day holds.”
Gibb and Fleming played back at team state in the opening round, with Fleming securing a win.
Along with Chalstrom making the semifinals in 2013, Mary Eide made the final four the season prior.
“I would like to thank the whole team coming to support me and making a time commitment to be here,” Gibb said. “It really helps and I appreciate it greatly. I would also like to thank (head coach) Shawn Neverman for always calming me down when I need it a little.”
