Gaels pick up first win
MANSON — The St. Edmond baseball team broke into the win column on Thursday night, as eighth-grader Blake Bartlett had a strong outing on the mound.
The Gaels (1-5 overall) knocked off Manson Northwest Webster (0-4) behind Bartlett’s 12 strikeouts, 9-7.
“It’s nice to get a win and hopefully we can build on that. Any win is a good win,” said St. Edmond head coach Mike Szalat. “We still had four errors and we need to clean that up.”
The St. Edmond eighth-grader went five innings, allowing four hits. He walked three batters and gave up two earned runs. Classmate Maddox Shirbroun came in for relief and fanned four batters. Sixteen of the Gaels 21 outs came by strikeout.
At the plate Bartlett drove in three runs.
“You combine those guys with Jack (McElroy), I like our top three guys,” Szalat said. “Those two have had good coaching. We are the recipients of that. We’ve tweaked a few things and they both like the change we did with their change ups.
“We inherited a couple of good guys that understand the game and how to pitch.”
Grant Galles had two hits including a double as did Shirbroun. Griffin Laufersweiler and Jack McElroy had two hits as well. Koleman Hanson had a double.
Shirbroun had two RBI, while Galles, Julian Blanco, Kade Schliegel and McElroy also drove in runs.
For the Cougars Mason Anderson and Kamden Birkey had two hits each. Birkey and Isaiah Daggett had doubles.
Daggett and Dawson Marine drove in three runs each. Also driving in runs were Dylan Meyer, Anderson and Birkey.
The Gaels are back in action on Monday when they host Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in a doubleheader at Rogers Park. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
