Gaels lose opener at Newell-Fonda
NEWELL — The St. Edmond softball team put together a late-inning rally, but couldn’t catch traditional power Newell-Fonda in both teams’ season openers on Memorial Day.
The Gaels (0-1 overall) scored three runs in the top of the seventh, which wasn’t enough, falling 6-4 to the Mustangs (1-1).
“We just need to get some timely hits,” said SEHS head coach BIll Shirbroun. “We will continue to improve as the season goes on.”
Newell-Fonda got on the board first, with a 2-0 lead after four. The Gaels plated one in the fifth as the Mustangs went up 5-1 after five and then 6-1.
Sophia Schlienz led the Gaels at the plate with two hits. Mariah Myers, Lauren Gibb, Toryn Helle, Myrah Lemon and Breckyn Ulrich also had hits.
Gibb, Helle, Ansley Oswald and Schlienz each drove in runs. Myers walked three times and scored two runs.
Jocee Walsh picked up the win for the Mustangs. She allowed seven hits and four earned runs, walking five and striking out three in the victory.
Danika Meyer had a big night at the plate, connecting for a home run with two hits and three RBI to pace N-F. Kinzee Hinders had a triple, while Rylee Hogrefe had a double.
Hinders and Camryn Puhrmann both had RBI.
The Gaels are back in action on Tuesday when they host Saint Ansgar. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
