HUMBOLDT — Humboldt picked up two victories over St. Edmond in the new North Central Conference doubleheader format.

The Wildcats (3-0 overall, 2-0 NCC) won the opener, 18-3, and the nightcap, 18-1, over the Gaels (0-3, 0-2) on Wednesday.

“We had 11 errors and gave up 14 hits,” said St. Edmond head coach Mike Szalat. “That’s not a good recipe when 25 guys get on base.

“When you give up extra outs, it snowballs. It’s hard when you allow that many free passes (on base) especially.”

Humboldt’s Gabe Flatau and Cyler Cirks combined to throw a one-hitter in the nightcap. Both pitchers struck out five batters.

Kinnick Henning had the lone hit for the Gaels.

Isaiah Busick was 5-for-5 with three RBI and four runs. Busick had a double and a home run. Chase Hansen was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI, including a double.

Avyon Sutterfield had two hits and drove in five runs. Dane Clark had a double and two hits with an RBI.

Jaxson Kirchhoff had two RBI and Ascher Gonder also drove in a run.

In the opener, the Gaels struggled in the field, committing 11 errors and allowing 14 hits.

For St. Edmond, they had four hits. Koleman Hanson, Julian Blanco, Ethan Swisher and Griffin Laufersweiler had hits. Hanson and Blanco drove in runs.

Busick had two hits and an RBI. Hansen had three RBI, while Clark drove in two.

Mason Van Pelt, Valley Davis, Parker Sleiter, Keegan Groat, Griffin Groat, Kirchhoff and Chase Flaherty all had an RBI for Humboldt.

“We have to figure out the things we did wrong and improve,” Szalat siad. “We seem to have a lack of concentration. It’s a part of growing up and we have to battle through it.We have to learn from it, but we can’t harp on it.

“Our energy level is not there and that was the disappointing thing for me. It’s the mental things that upset me the most.”

The Gaels are back in action on Tuesday when they host Webster City in a doubleheader at Rogers Park.

Starting at $2.99/week.
