IOWA CITY — One of the more storied high school tennis careers at Fort Dodge came to an end here Wednesday when Micah Flaherty played his final point.

The Dodger senior earned his fourth medal at the Class 2A state tennis championships, placing sixth in singles. Flaherty also finished fourth (junior year) and seventh (sophomore) in singles earlier in his career, along with an eighth-place effort as a freshman in doubles.

“It’s been a phenomenal experience all four years,” Flaherty said. “A big thanks to all my coaches and family throughout my career.

“Some of my best memories are on Dodger Courts and I can’t wait to see the upcoming kids take over.”

Flaherty posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ben Smalley of Cedar Falls in the consolation semifinals before falling to William Feagle of Iowa City High for fifth place, 6-0, 6-2. Flaherty and Feagle both suffered losses in the championship rounds to Waukee Northwest players Jake Nelson and Kellan Croatt.

Flaherty is the fourth Dodger to secure four medals at state tennis, joining Mitch Eslick, Lucas Boyd and Jonny Bowser. Flaherty is the first to medal in singles three times, as Bowser and David Knight each did it twice.

Heading into the state tournament, Flaherty was 13-0 and hadn’t dropped a set during the season, winning all 25. He also held a mark of 152-11 in total games played.

As a junior, Flaherty was also unbeaten going into the state tourney, going 12-0 without losing a set and winning 132 of 153 games played.

“Micah put in the work and was determined to become the best player he could be,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “He did things the right way.

“It was a joy to coach him over these last few years.”

Anthony Schulte of Cedar Rapids Prairie topped his brother, Dylan Schulte, in the finals, 7-5, 7-5, for the state singles title. Pleasant Valley’s Karthik Ganesh and Jatin Kodavatiganti won doubles gold.

Starting at $2.99/week.
