FD girls in action at regionals
AMES — The Fort Dodge girls tennis team was in action here Monday at a Class 2A individual singles and doubles regional tournament.
All four Dodger representatives advanced into the second round before falling, including singles players Manuela Rodriguez and Amy Muftillaeua.
Rodriguez, a junior who received a bye in the opening round, fell to Laura Chen of Ames in the second.
Muftillaeua scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kaley Swanson of Ankeny Centennial before falling to Rihanna Launderville from Johnston.
“I was pleased with the overall performance of the girls,” FDSH head coach Julie Astor said. “We had a very tough district, as Johnston, Ankeny Centennial and Ames all have kids that are contenders for state titles.
“Winning our first-round matches was a good step in the right direction for the program.”
Grace Behrens and Lacey Larson scored a victory over a doubles pair from Mason City. They were ousted by a pair from Johnston.
The same went for Janelle Derrig and Kaitlyn Folsom, as they picked up a straight-set win over a doubles team from Sioux City North before being eliminated by a second team from Johnston.
Fort Dodge will now host Sioux City West on Friday in team regionals.
