Dodgers sweep at Des Moines North
DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge baseball squad picked up a pair of lopsided victories over Des Moines North here on Tuesday.
Scores were 19-0 and 17-0 in favor of the Dodgers.
Sophomore Tanner Peterson and senior Landen Grandors dominated on the mound for head coach Blake Utley’s squad, working 12 total innings of shutout baseball with a combined 27 strikeouts. Peterson had a five-inning no-hitter with 12 Ks; Grandors gave up just one hit and whiffed 15.
“Our pitchers really set the tone,” Utley said. “They commanded the strike zone and stayed ahead of the hitters. The defense did well behind them, too. Tanner really should have had a perfect game, and Landen was sharp.”
Fort Dodge (4-1 overall) plated 10 runs in the second inning to back Peterson and never looked back. Sophomore Cal Pederson drove in four runs, and junior Jaxson Dencklau was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBI.
Senior Royce Pederson and freshman Reggie Pederson both drove in a pair as well, as did senior Jase Nekvinda and sophomore Bo Marsh.
Kolton Schiltz was 1-for-2 and stole a pair of bases.
The Dodgers struggled to pull away in the nightcap, even though Grandors was in complete control. A 14-run seventh inning made the final look deceptively lopsided.
Senior Rylan Kingrey, who had two hits in the opener, was 2-for-3 with a pair of triples and three runs scored. Royce Pederson collected three hits and drove in two.
Reggie Pederson was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Schiltz, Cal Pederson and Davis Underberg contributed two hits each as well.
“It was kind of a slow start in both (contests), but sometimes, it’s tough to show patience in situations like this,” Utley said. “You can leave the ballpark feeling frustrated, even after (a sweep). But I don’t think that was the case here (last night). The offense did well overall, and a lot of guys contributed.”
The Dodgers return to action on Friday in a home doubleheader against No. 4 Waukee. First pitch at McNeil Field is set for 5 p.m.
