Dodger girls lose regional match
URBANDALE — The Fort Dodge girls tennis team dropped a Class 2A regional contest to Urbandale on Wednesday.
“We lost to a very solid Urbandale team. We came out tight and they took advantage of that and jumped up on the girls pretty quickly,” said Fort Dodge head coach Julie Astor.
The Dodgers were playing without their No. 2 player Amy Muftillaeva.
“Amy left to go back to her home country Tuesday morning,” Astor said. “Without her everyone played up one spot. Many think it shouldn’t be a huge deal moving one position, but the competition is just a little different and can throw a person off their “normal” game.”
Manuela Rodriguez lost 6-3 and 6-0 to Danni Pederson in No. 1 singles. Grace Behrens fell to Gwen Venteicher, 6-1 and 6-0.
Janelle Derrig lost to Melisa Kazazic (7-5 and 6-1). Kaitlyn Folsom lost 6-0 and 6-0 to Timber Negley and Claire Thompson lost 6-1 and 6-1 to Sydney Claire.
“Claire Thompson stepped in to fill the No. 6 spot,” Astor said. “She had limited singles play this season, but I am proud of the effort she had. Janelle Derrig fought hard while battling a knee injury. It has been a great season and I am beyond pleased with the progress the girls made.”
Ten Dodger seniors played in their last matches for Fort Dodge.
“We are losing 10 seniors, they leave some big shoes to fill,” Astor said. “All of them have given a lot to Fort Dodge tennis and I thank them for their work and dedication.
“With the girls’ season moving to the fall, we have a short turnaround and we will be back at it in just a few months.”
