Condon closes his Manson Northwest Webster career in style

DES MOINES — Matt Condon put a wrap on an incredible high school career here Friday at the state track and field championships inside Drake Stadium with more hardware to bring home to Manson Northwest Webster.

Condon won the Class 2A long jump title on Thursday, placed third in both the high jump and 400-meter hurdles on Friday, and also competed in the 110 hurdle prelims throughout a frenetic final session as a Cougar.

All total, the senior earned seven Top-10 individual finishes among his 10 qualifying appearances at state in his brilliant MNW career.

“Overall, it was a great week,” Condon said. “I was hoping I could get into the 53s for the 400 hurdles but I’m still happy with the time. The jumping events went great.

“It was an awesome way to end it.”

Condon broke his own school record in the high jump when he cleared 6-feet, 8-inches on his third and final attempt. He came up short of clearing 6-9, as Camanche senior Tyson Seeser won the title on misses.

In the 400 hurdles, the Top-6 performers all came out of the third and final heat, as Ryker Dengler of West Liberty topped Seeser and Condon for gold. Condon’s time of 54.06 was a personal record.

Condon’s 110 hurdle prelim time of 15.57 placed him 12th overall, as 15.24 was the last qualifying time.

Squaring off against Condon in the high jump was Twin Lakes Conference rival Byron Maina of Emmetsburg, as the senior cleared 6-3 to place fourth overall.

Algona

The Bulldogs had a busy day on the blue oval and around it, led by a third place finish in the 3A shot put from Max Nevitt. The junior, who was sixth in the discus, launched a personal best of 57-3.

Algona’s distance medley relay of Tate Garman, Tyler Bradley, Evan Allie and Gavin Weber came home in fourth in a season-best time of 3:29.49. The 4×100 relay of William Weichert, Levi Walker, Garman and Allie qualified for the finals with the fourth fastest time at 42.71.

Weichert, Garman, Bradley and Allie took sixth in the 4×200 in 1:28.79. The 4×400 relay of Weber, Ashton Moreno, Walker and Bradley was 16th in the prelims in 3:27.90.

Bishop Garigan

Amaury Thomas placed 11th in the 1A discus, using a throw of 148-8 on his final attempt of the opening flight.

The 4×400 relay of Tate Foertsch, Andrew Lichter, Trayton Cink and Owen Murphy placed 21st in prelims with a time of 3:32.49.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows

Huxley Lingenfelter grabbed 15th in the 2A discus with a throw of 142-8 for the Cowboys. In the high jump, Chaz Lane did not clear a height.

Humboldt

Elliot Carlson had the top effort for the Wildcats on Friday, placing 13th in the 3A long jump.

Carlson went 20-8.75 for his best leap.

Isaiah Busick was 17th in the shot put with a throw of 48-11. Teammate Jack Guy finished 22nd in the same event with a toss of 43-7.75.

South Central Calhoun

Andrew Anderson pulled double duty for the Titans, earning 11th in the 2A high jump and 18th in the 110 hurdle prelims.

Anderson cleared 6-1, and also went 15.86 in the hurdles.

Teammate Darius Eigsti joined him in the 110 hurdles, finishing 14th in 15.67.

Southeast Valley

Alex Burger had his best time at the right time, clocking a 55.24 in the 2A 400 hurdles to place seventh for the Jaguars.

Burger, a sophomore, captured the second heat of the event. Junior Colin Johnson was 21st in the same event with a time of 57.83.

The 4×100 relay of Dreyvon Steadman, Logan Jaeschke, Bryce Harrison and Kaden Showers turned in a season best time in the prelims at 43.77 to cross in 14th while the 4×200 was 16th in 1:31.22 behind Johnson, Jaeschke, Harrison and Showers.

Webster City

Justin Callahan wrapped up his junior season by recording a personal-best mark in the 400 hurdles. Callahan was 13th in 3A in a time of 55.67.
