Woodbine enters on hot streak

First tourney test for St. Edmond boys

DES MOINES — Standing in front of fourth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond here Wednesday inside Wells Fargo Arena will be Woodbine, winners of seven in a row.

The Tigers (23-2 overall) avenged their most recent loss when they eliminated Coon Rapids-Bayard in a substate final, 50-41, reversing a 54-24 setback in early February. Their only other loss came at the hands of Treynor in late January.

Woodbine averages almost 72 points per game and allows just under 41, with 24 of its 25 games having been against 1A opponents. They start two seniors in Carter Gruver and Carson Kelley alongside junior brothers Brody Pryor and Jax Pryor, with sophomore Landon Blum rounding things out.

Gruver leads the way at 17 points per game, shooting almost 50 percent from the 3-point line. Blum adds 15 and seven rebounds with Jax Pryor averaging 11.6 and six.

Blum, a standout football player for Woodbine, stands 6-foot-5 while Jax Pryor checks in at 6-4. Kelley is also 6-4 as many of the key players in the rotation helped the Tigers reach the second round of the eight-player playoffs this past fall.

Brody and Jax are triplets with Katy as older brother Layne Pryor just recently concluded a standout career as a tight end at Northern Iowa and has entered the upcoming NFL Draft.

Woodbine knocked off fellow 1A qualifier Madrid in an epic substate final last year before falling to North Linn in the state quarterfinals. Gruver, Kelley, Pryor, Blum and Pryor were all starters a season ago, as the Tigers have gone 46-4 the last two years.

Of Woodbine’s 25 games, 24 have come against fellow 1A teams, as Treynor is the lone non-1A school they played, losing 51-33.

This marks the fifth appearance all-time at state for the Tigers, who also qualified in 1969 along with back-to-back trips in 1995-96 and again in 2024-25. They have yet to earn a state tournament victory.
